3 Biggest Challenges Affecting Your Workplace in 2023

3 Biggest Challenges Affecting Your Workplace in 2023

Attracting and Retaining Talent

A survey of 460 hiring managers found more than two-thirds (67%) of Australian employers have seen an increase in staff departures in the past three years with the average turnover standing at 15%.

Millennials will make up more than 50% of the workforce by 2021, and roughly 75% by 2025. Millennials highly value the quality of their workspaces, with nearly 70% saying they would make various tradeoffs

to secure a better workspace. In some cases, those trade-offs were significant. For instance, 7% said they would take a modest pay cut in exchange for a better office environment, while 8% said they

would compromise their promotion prospects. The cost of turnover is up to 2.5x the departing annual salary. Full-time earnings in Australia average A$82,436 a year. This means employee turnover is costing businesses on average more than $206,000 per departing employee.

Employee Engagement

Only 14% of employees in Australia and New Zealand are engaged in their jobs. An overwhelming 71% are not engaged and as many as 15% are actively disengaged. So what does this mean? “Not Engaged” employees may be generally satisfied but are not cognitively and emotionally connected to their work and workplace; they will usually show up to work and do the minimum required but will quickly leave their company for a slightly better offer. “Actively disengaged” employees are not satisfied

and have miserable work experiences. So how does this affect your business? Disengaged employees have 37% higher absenteeism, 18% lower productivity and 15% lower profitability. When that

translates into dollars, you’re looking at the cost of 34% of a disengaged employee’s annual salary, or $3,400 for every $10,000 they make. This equals a huge cost of more than $28,000 per worker per year on average.

Work Related Injuries

Musculoskeletal injuries accounted for 43.8% of the total cases for workers’ compensation claims. A leading cause of musculoskeletal injuries is prolonged exposure to ergonomic risk factors such as

repetitive activities, poor positioning, forceful motions, and extended time in static positions. Work related injuries have a substantial impact on the employer’s bottom line. Costs include time off work, workers compensation payments, hiring and training of replacement employees and lost

productivity. Did you know that managers and professionals had the highest unit cost for work-related injuries or illnesses of $155,200 and $143,400 respectively?

The Case for Height Adjustable Standing Desks

Texas A&M University examined the productivity differences between two groups of call center employees over the course of six months and found that those with height adjustable standing desks were about 46% more productive than those with traditional, seated desk configurations. Productivity was measured by how many successful calls were completed per hour at work. National Health Service (NHS) gave 77 of their 146 employees height-adjustable standing desks, and the rest continued working at their standard desks. They found that workers reported being less tired and more engaged over time, workers who stood also reported having fewer musculoskeletal problems, being less anxious and experiencing a better quality of life.
